The Wuhan Yangtze River Tunnel surveyed and designed by SIYUAN is located between the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge and Wuhan Yangtze River No.2Bridge. It’s a double-way 4-lane tunnel with a full length of 3.6km. The project broke ground in November, 2004, and was put to trial operation on December, 28, 2008. It’s the first underwater tunnel to cross the Yangtze River, the first to set up research program, the first to be approved by the government, the first for construction commencement, the first with shield tunneling method, and the first to open to traffic, thus it’s definitely the “No. 1 Tunnel across the Great Yangtze River”.

In 1995, SIYUAN started the proposal studies for Wuhan Yangtze River Tunnel project. During the process of initial engineering studies, survey & design, and construction, SIYUAN carried out a lot of scientific studies and tests for 15 key technologies, developed 5 integrated technologies, and gained 14 innovative achievements. Numerous world-level difficulties have been addressed during the construction of Wuhan Yangtze River Tunnel, such as the large diameter, high water pressure, high permeability, soft and hard unbalanced stratum, long-distance tunneling, complicated ground environment, large traffic flow, large number of ramps, etc., and important technical breakthroughs have been made for domestic underwater tunnel construction, turning a new page for the underwater tunnel construction in China.

In In April, 2010, the “Complete Technologies for Engineering Construction of Wuhan Yangtze River Tunnel” by SIYUAN has passed the achievement identification hosted by Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Agency. The identification commission with Liang Wenhao, academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as the chief, acknowledged that the research result has achieved outstanding technological economic, environmental and social benefits, with its systematicness and profoundness rarely seen both home and abroad, and has generally reached international advanced level in terms of shield tunnel segment lining design, macromolecule polymers non-dispersed mud stabilization technology, synchronized grouting materials and techniques, etc..
