Nanjing Railway Station standing by the Xuanwu Lake designed by SIYUAN, is one of the major passenger stations of Nanjing Railway Terminal. The station yard covers 14 platforms and 16 sidings. The station has a total floor area of 126,000 square meters, divided into four stories, three aboveground and one underground. It’s a modernized large-scale comprehensive transportation terminal, integrating multiple means of transportation including high-speed railway, common railway, city metro, bus, and taxi, etc. . It was put into operation on September 28, 2005.

The station is of light steel roof structure made of steel upright stanchions and stayed cables. The steel roof supported by 18 masts looks like a giant sailing boat, berthing silently by the beautiful Xuanwu Lake, integrated with the green mountain, blue waters and the ancient city. It’s the first domestic station to adopt open-type waiting mode, with the inner space of the public hall and waiting room transparent and open, setting a precedent in the history of domestic railway station design.

The streamline model of “up-in & down-out” is adopted for passenger entrance and exit, creating a clear and orderly passenger flow organization; the novel structure form has fully demonstrated the perfect combination between modern technology and aesthetics; the three-dimensional traffic enables the seamless joint between urban rail transit and railway; and the multi-directional entrance-exit pattern has realized, for the first time in a real sense, the “zero distance” transfer between railway and urban rail transit in China. Its scientific design and operational management have successfully created a safe, stable, orderly, harmonious and warm environment for passenger transportation, further demonstrating the double-benefits on society and economy brought about by the new passenger station.

In 2009, the Nanjing Railway Station designed by SIYUAN has been selected and listed as the Top 100 Classical Projects in the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. This station also served as the opening page for the chapter of third- generation railway passenger stations in China.
